Doctors and Researchers

Meet the doctors and researchers who are leading the way with their groundbreaking cannabis work.

Sean D. McAllister, PhD

Dr. Sean McAllister of the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has spent years researching cannabidiol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis. "Cannabidiol offers hope of a non-toxic therapy that could treat aggressive forms of cancer without any of the painful side effects of chemotherapy.".

With backing from the National Institute of Health, Dr. Sean McAllister conducted a study and found that cannabidiol inhibited breast cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and tumor growth.

Dr. Pierre Desprez is the principal Investigator at California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. The main focus of the laboratory is the regulation of normal and cancerous breast epithelial cell phenotypes by helix-loop-helix transcription factors.

Dr. Manuel Guzman is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Madrid, Spain. Researcher Dr. Manuel Guzman has done a whole series of studies since 1999 demonstrating the efficacy of cannabinoids to fight cancer. Dr. Manuel Guzman of Complutense University in Madrid, lead author of the only human study yet published of a cannabinoid as cancer treatment, puts it slightly more diplomatically. Dr. Manuel Guzman of Complutense University in Madrid, lead author of the only human study yet published of a cannabinoid as cancer treatment, puts it slightly more diplomatically. The lack of immediate followup to those early reports "remains a mystery to me," he says. Guzman cites a number of obstacles to human trials, including the fact that cannabinoids are "still seen by many doctors and regulatory agencies as drugs of abuse," as well as "lots of paperwork" and a lack of commercial interest in natural compounds that can't be patented.

Prof. Mechoulam is with the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products at the Faculty of Medicine. He is former Rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences. His research interests are in the field of the chemistry and biological activity of natural products and medicinal agents. His main contributions are in the field of the constituents of cannabis and the endogenous cannabinoids found in the brain and the periphery. He has published extensively on their pharmacological activities.
